The 3D printing sector grows rapidly”, says Julian Berlow, CEO and inventor of Scoobe3D. “We could do even more 3D printing if it were easier to obtain 3D models to print. To date, there are ready-made designs on the internet. But if no suitable design is available, expensive 3D scanners, CAD software and a patient person’s time are necessary.

Now live on Kickstarter, the Scoobe3D offers easy and accurate 3D scanning without the hassle of post-processing. Operating under the motto of “3D as easy as 2D”, meaning 3D scans that are immediately 3D printable, Scoobe3D utilizes a number of technologies to achieve this.

High Accuracy with Wide Material Detection

Scoobe3D combines 3D-by-Polarization, Photogrammetry, and Time-of-Flight 3D scanning techniques to calculate its 3D models. Within a few minutes of panning around a target object, a 3D model at 0.1mm accuracy is available in printable STL and OBJ file formats. Deviations depend on the size of the object and correlate to the amount of data collected.

With the exception of glass, Scoobe3D can detect all materials, leaving no gaps in the resulting scan. It can even capture reflective surfaces with no prior treatment or preparation. This is one of the biggest advantages when comparing Scoobe3D to other 3D scanning technologies.

For the user, this means that no manual post-processing is necessary. Of course, models can still be exported for editing at the user’s convenience.

Shaking Hands? Crisp Scans

The Scoobe3D scanner was tested in collaboration with the renowned Fraunhofer Institute. “Scoobe3D is capturing images quickly enough to make it possible to use the scanner by hand,” explains Joachim Kleylein-Feuerstein from the Fraunhofer Institute of Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA).

This ability means that not only can you freely move around the object to capture data with no loss in quality, but objects can be turned around during the scan so that the bottom of the object is captured as well. Furthermore, the scanning process can be interrupted for a coffee break and easily be resumed afterward. This is particularly comfortable for the scanning of large objects and rooms.

Intuitive and Easy to Use; Developed with the community

The Scoobe3D was developed in close collaboration with a community of 3D enthusiasts. “We did this because we wanted to make sure to give makers what they need — not what we thought they need,” stresses Julian Berlow. “All of the feedback, wishes, and suggestions of the community were realized in 2.5 years of development and are an intrinsic part of what the Scoobe3D scanner is today.”

The result is a convenient, independent device which easily fits in your jeans pocket. It also possesses a display of its own, on which you can follow the scan’s progress.

The scanning process itself is very intuitive, needing only to move around the object. A worthwhile application is to digitize stock spare parts for later on-demand manufacture.

A High-Resolution Handheld as Inexpensive as a Desktop 3D Scanner

Scoobe3D GmbH believes that anyone with a unique object should have access to a simple way of creating a 3D model within a manageable time frame. The new Scoobe3D scanner manages this, offering users high-performance technology at an affordable price.
