Seeed Studio has released a new microcontroller board, the Xiao RA4M1, priced at just $4.99.

The release comes hot on the heels of last week’s launch of the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 – a $5 microcontroller board itself – with the company’s new RP2350 microcontroller.

Set to ship in late August, Seed Studio’s “thumb-sized” Xiao RA4M1 microcontroller board is powered by a Renesas RA4M1 microcontroller, which can run at speeds up to 48 MHz and features 256 KB of flash memory and 32 KB of SRAM.

The board boasts 19 GPIOs, with eight IO pins added that Seeed Studio says enable “more complex applications”. There’s also CAN BUS, USB 2.0, and a built-in RGB LED.

Additionally, the board has four operating modes, as well as compatibility with Arduino IDE, and support for add-ons like displays, Grove modules, and AI sensors.

Sweetening the deal is an “early adopter program”, in which those who run or maintain Arduino-related GitHub pages or social media channels may be eligible to receive two free boards.
