Designer and artist Sophy Wong’s latest creation is a wearable dress that has been 3D printed onto nylon mesh.
Created from Wizard’s Voodoo PLA filament from Fillamentum and printed directly onto the mesh, the dress consists of two silk-lined pieces – a top and a skirt – with invisible zippers. The result is an impressive, armor-like effect that lends itself very well to cosplay, thanks to its light weight and flexibility.
Wong specializes in “wearable technology and digital fabrication,” according to her website, where she showcases the dress alongside her other projects, including a spacesuit and “LED manicures.” A fascinating conversation between Wong and Mythbusters’ Adam Savage, posted on the Tested YouTube channel, explores the process and design of the dress. “It was kind of a design exercise and an experiment to try applying the process to a full garment, but I also wanted it to work as a fashion piece on its own,” she wrote recently in a Tweet.
