The open-source, DIY desktop 3D printer The 100 has taken the fifth spot on the #SpeedBoatRace leaderboard.

Following a recent update showcasing The 100 printing at 1000 mm/s, a video posted on Reddit this past Sunday shows a Benchy being printed at 800 mm/s with accelerations between 100,000 – 160, 0000 mm/s2, finishing at a time of 3:03.

“It took me four days of fiddling around to finally, on my 73rd try, get this print at a quality and speed that I was happy with,” The 100’s creator, Matthäus Szturc, said in an interview with All3DP.

The finished product is about what you’d expect from a Benchy printed at such speeds – there are overshoots on the seam, a melted top, and stringing – but quality was not the main goal this time around. That’s for the “near future,” when Szturc will time and record The 100 printing a “perfect Benchy” in what he estimates will be 10-11 minutes.

Szturc says the official release of the second version of The 100, which features improvements such as a direct-drive toolhead, is set for August 20. At that time, it will be completely free on Printables and GitHub.

“We will also produce an introduction video, where we show all the new features and talk a bit about the bill of materials we used for this high-speed edition of the printer,” Szturc said.

Those who can’t wait, of course, can always subscribe to The 100’s Patreon, where they can get access to The 100’s updated design before its official release.
