Raspberry Pi Ltd. says pre-order customers can expect their new Raspberry Pi 5 to arrive soon, and that the company is on track to have backorders fulfilled and the single-board computers (SBC) stocked on reseller shelves by the end of the year.
Following the announcement on September 28, 2023, Raspberry Pi has taken to its blog pages, YouTube, and more to release a deluge of information about the new board.
Along with the new Broadcom BCM2712 SOC with a 2.4GHz 64-bit ARM CPU, the Raspberry Pi 5 includes the organization’s first-ever in-house silicon: the RP1 I/O controller.
“All of the masters on RP1 can talk directly to the system memory on the main SOC, and similarly the peripherals in the RP1 address space are mapped into the main SOC”, the company says. “So, from a software’s point of view, these things might as well be integrated.”
Meanwhile, the new DA9091 “Gilmour” power-management integrated circuit (PMIC) has added highly requested (and very welcome) quality-of-life features, including a real-time clock (RTC) that can be powered by a separate battery when the Pi is disconnected from power, and a power button that supports hard and soft power-off/on events.
The new device maintains the Raspberry Pi 4’s footprint. However, updates to the connectors may prevent the new board from being a simple drop-in. The audio jack and camera connectors, for example, have gone the way of the dinosaur, replaced by two FPC connectors – the same four-lane MIPI interfaces as found on the Raspberry Pi Compute Module I/O board. The Gigabit Ethernet jack has moved from the top of the board to the bottom, along with the PoE connector. Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi Ltd., notes these changes sacrifice compatibility with existing PoE and PoE+ HATs, but a new “PoE+ for Raspberry Pi 5” will soon follow.
Compared to the previous generation, the organization’s benchmarking of the device for typical computing tasks has found more than doubling of both single-core and multi-core performance.
The Raspberry Pi 5 is now available for purchase in both 4 GB and 8 GB RAM configurations for $60 and $80, respectively. Current shipping estimates range from two to ten weeks, where estimates are available at all.
