3D model repository Thingiverse has added an AI label and filter to its online repository, providing increased transparency regarding how 3D models on the platform were created.
The update involves both creators and regular users. Creators now have the option to label their models (called “Things” on the platform) as AI-generated. Users can toggle a filter to show such models or not. There’s also a report functionality, should users suspect an uploaded model features AI-generated elements but is not labeled as such.
The move follows an uptick of AI content on the Thingiverse platform, and cites “concerns about the quality of AI-generated models.” This contrasts with many other model repositories, which provide AI-powered tools to help the user create 3D models from text prompts and images.
It’s unclear whether the concerns mentioned are meant generally, or specific to Thingiverse and a result of user complaints. We’ve reached out for a comment from UltiMaker and will update accordingly.
