A new Kickstarter campaign promises an SLA 3D printer that can print and cure in the same box.
If delivered, the Starfield 3D (no relation to the recently released Bethesda title) will boast a 350 x 200 x 350 mm build volume and be capable of achieving an XY resolution of 25 microns and a layer thickness of 25-100 microns.
Users would control the machine via a seven-inch touchscreen, and print via SD card or USB. It’s unclear if the Starfield 3D would offer a Wi-Fi connection, although this doesn’t seem to be the case.
The printer would also feature automatic resin feeding, with four “detection lights” providing users with at-a-glance resin level monitoring, an auto-heating resin vat, a built-in air purifier, and a laser module that Starfield 3D says can last up to 20,000 hours. There’s also “permanent leveling” – meaning leveling would only be necessary when the build plate or glass is replaced.
In all, the Starfield 3D is making a splash with some big talk. Backers have pledged over $290,000 on the campaign’s ~ $13,000 goal at the time of this writing. That’s no small wonder; the printer would undoubtedly save users a lot of hassle (and space), should it work as described, with both the “all-in-one” concept and permanent leveling feature serving as innovative, time-saving features. However, this is all predicated on a big “if” – meaning “if it works”.
Super-early bird packages of the Starfield 3D are still available at $1,099, netting backers a substantial discount off the printer’s $2,199 MSRP. Shipping, Starfield says, will begin three months after the end of the campaign, which has 33 days left to go.
