A new mod for Creality K1 Max 3D printers allows users to upgrade their machines with a multi-filament system of sorts – and ostensibly benefit from a printer’s heat.

A DIY build by YouTuber Digital Inventor, the MFS-K1M consists of both 3D printed and off-the-shelf parts. Once assembled, it acts as an acrylic-sided, top-mounted filament storage unit that holds up to three one-kilogram spools of filament. It’s no automatic multi-material system, but looks to improve the overall ease of use and provide a simple storage solution for a few spools.

The MFS-K1M also functions as a filament dryer, its creator says. But, rather than relying on a traditional power source, the MFS-K1M uses the printer’s own heat to keep filament dry. There’s also a top vent that users can open or close to “control” the temperature and humidity of the enclosure, as well as two “dry baskets” to store silica gel for moisture absorption.

Assembly here isn’t necessarily a walk in the park – you’ll need to cut your own acrylic, for instance – but it’s also not something you’ll need an engineering degree for. An assembly manual exists to walks users through the process.

Digital Inventor sells the device under three licensing options – personal ($29.97), pro ($79.95), and commercial ($424.97) – all of which come with the aforementioned assembly manual, plus a part checklist and STL files for the MFS-K1M’s printable parts. The pro tier includes all of the above, as well as STEP files and a spec sheet for every part, allowing users to more easily edit, amend, or otherwise customize the design. Under the commercial license, users can print, assemble, and then sell the completed unit.

Top-mounted spool holders are already a popular mod for Creality K1 3D printers, especially for printing with TPU. However, owners of the smaller Creality K1 with their hearts set on an MFS-K1M may not have long to wait, as a K1 version is apparently coming soon.
