What started as an Etsy-based venture for designer David Sammons has now made the leap to a storefront in a New York shopping mall.

Sammons’ Goblin Market Studio is predominantly a cosplay company, with items such as wearable ears and horns (think Baphomet and other fantasy-tinged creatures) available for purchase online as both 3D printed items and STLs. But that began to change after Sammons purchased a 3D scanner booth: a 3DF Scanner 3 by 3D Fascination that uses an array of 105 cameras and high-CRI LED light strips to create full-body, full-color scans in five minutes.

“The booth was mostly for use with events,” Sammons said in an interview with All3DP. “I wanted to scan other people and things for products as well, but my house’s ceiling is too low. Near me, there is a local shopping mall that is nearly empty. I was able to secure a space there at a very low price.”

Now set up at Fingerlakes Mall in Auburn, New York, Goblin Market Studio is available by appointment only. The transition marks a rare move from online to brick-and-mortar – but in Sammons’ case, it makes sense. Customers arrive, scan themselves or their pets, then wait about a week as their scan is cleaned and printed. For full-color prints, Sammons makes use of a 3D printing service. Any scans larger than about six inches, he prints himself.

“Everyone loves the scanner. You can see them get this look in their eyes, as they are thinking of some ideas for it. They love the idea of a 3D photo booth,” he said. “Right now, I am trying to figure out how to get more scanning appointments between the events I attend.”

For now, Sammons’ cosplay creations remain his main source of income, bringing in nearly 30% of Goblin Market Studio’s revenue. As he books more appointments and events, Sammons said, he predicts that will change, as 3D scanning allows him to expand beyond the cosplay space and into less-niche offerings such as personalized wedding cake toppers, ornaments, and statues.
