Like many employees, Reddit user Important-Ad-6936 – whose real name is Martin  – commutes to work. However, unlike most, he does it with a Bambu Lab P1P 3D printer in tow.

During the week, Martin stays near his company’s headquarters in Germany, driving home to Austria on the weekends, where, until recently, he kept his 3D printers.

“It bummed me out that I had to wait the entire week to finish my robotics projects,” he said, in an interview with All3DP. “So I started to take some of my printers with me.”

Initially, Martin attempted to haul his Prusa MK3 and a large-format CR-6 Max back and forth. They proved fragile and touchy, however, with bad weather only making things worse. The P1P, he said, solved those issues.

“After carrying it around in its cardboard box for a couple of weeks, it proved to be even more reliable in this scenario than my MK3, so I decided to weather-harden it and make it less susceptible to bumps in the back of my car,” he said.

The result is the “Rugged P1P” – a 20 kg setup housed in a repurposed, nine-inch 12U stage rack for audio equipment. It holds Martin’s P1P, a power strip for its 230 V components (including the printer itself), a Raspberry Pi camera, externally powered LED lighting, filament spools, a filament dryer, an activated carbon air scrubber – and everything else Martin needs to print on the go.

Removable covers on the rack’s front and back allow for easy access to the printer for servicing and maintenance – as well as act as enclosure doors. There’s also a server rack shelf onto which the P1P is mounted via self-made, TPU hold-down brackets – plus temperature-controlled fans, an external power connection, and a filament feeding port.
