Calibry is the latest hand-held 3D scanner from Thor3D, the 3D imaging company comprised of 50 engineers and mathematicians. The company announced the release of the scanner, which is now available to buy, at the TCT Asia exhibition in Shanghai, China.
“We named the scanner Calibry because the device is small and fast like a Hummingbird which is also known as Colibri. We also intentionally called it ‘cAlibry’ instead of ‘cOlibri’, because it echoes the word ‘calibrated’, meaning precise and accurate”, said Anna Zevelyov, CEO of Thor3D.
The company is calling Calibry a “first of its kind” as the hand-held scanner is designed to capture medium to large objects. Notable features of the scanner are a built-in touchscreen, a weight of just 700grams (1.5lbs) and the ability to collect up to 3M points per second.
Thor3D explains on its website that this scanner is the “next evolutionary step” in its development. This is because of a patent pending proprietary camera that it developed for this scanner. Previously, the company used off-the-shelf cameras in its scanners.
As a result of the newly developed camera, users will be able to capture “traditionally-difficult objects”. For example, shiny objects, sharp edges and human hair.
The company explains that the process of creating a camera was expensive and onerous but enabled them to reduce the cost of the Calibry for consumers. Thor3D also managed to keep costs down by using injection molding for the plastic casing of the device, rather than silicon molding. As a result, you can pick up your own hand-held scanner for $5,790 or €4,995, making it slightly more affordable than its competitors.
Zevelyov added, “I am confident that this device will be very popular with engineers, medical practitioners and educators because it is affordable, easy to use and can scan objects that were difficult to scan before.”
You can learn more about the scanner via the brand’s new website. Scanners will begin shipping from the company’s German HQ on June 3rd, 2019.
