Tinkercad has launched a “Sketch workspace”, broadening the free, web-based CAD software’s beginner-friendly capabilities – and thereby bringing them ever-closer to professional tools.

While the workspace doesn’t have the complexity you’ll find in advanced products like Fusion 360 or SolidWorks, users can nonetheless use its Pen tool to trace out 3D models, as well as create and connect straight lines and curves. They can then edit and adjust their designs by, for example, making corners or smoothing surfaces.

All told, this seems to be a great introduction for increasingly complex design projects. The software was previously limited to basic geometric shapes and the Scribble tool, which allows freehand drawing, but doesn’t offer the precision users can achieve with the Sketch workspace.

Tinkercad’s scaled-down UI is still there, too, with the Sketch workspace doing little to clutter or complicate things, which is a major benefit to those learning to use CAD software.

Accessing the Sketch workspace requires users to open a Tinkercad project and select the Pen tool. There, you’ll also find a brief introduction to the workspace and its features and tools.
