Just when you thought the Bambu Lab X1’s custom firmware couldn’t get any more custom, the team behind it, Accelerated Tech, goes and drops the X1Plus Expander.

Currently up (and fully funded) on Crowd Supply, the device adds a host of functionalities to X1-series 3D printers, including Ethernet and USB ports, an I²C connector, and space for sold-separately plugin modules such an LED strip driver, an on-style light for print farms, and a camera shutter release to help users create time lapses of their prints. Like the X1Plus firmware, the X1Plus Expander is fully open-source.

Users will control the X1 Plus Expander’s functionalities via the “Actions” subsystem, which comes programmed in the X1Plus’ firmware, and can even be used to “chain” commands, such as using G-code to trigger the camera shutter at specific nozzle positions to create smoother time-lapses.

The X1Plus Expander is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2040 and Microchip LAN9514, and is installed through what seems to be a simple process: users simply plug it into their printer “between the AP board and the chamber-monitoring camera”. Those who opt to print (or purchase) an enclosure will be able to stow it behind the X1’s touchscreen.

You’ll find a great deal more information about the X1Plus Expander on Crowd Supply, where you can back the device for $125. The aforementioned modules and enclosure are available there, too. Accelerated Tech estimates that first shipments will go out in mid-April 2025.
