Prusa Research has just released a new beta version of PrusaSlicer, which will be compatible with STEP files.

The company writes on GitHub:

“Starting with this release, PrusaSlicer is able to import STEP files, which is a format widely used for 3D modeling data exchange. Note that the model is tessellated on import and the slicing algorithms operate on the resulting triangle mesh, i.e., the model is not sliced analytically.”

As with previous versions of PrusaSlicer, the additions are open-source, with the company posting development on GitHub, including bug fixes for this latest beta version.

PrusaSlicer is a popular program with deep compatibility with the company’s own machines and third-party 3D printers.

The announcement was met with popular support on Reddit forums, with Mikolas3D from Prusa Research indicating that it’s the company’s ambition to take advantage of the differences between STLs and STEP files, namely supporting smooth arcs, at a future point.
