I don’t know what it is about dice – gaming dice to be more precise – that fosters my fascination.  Part of it is probably the memory of all the adventures generated by that handful of colored plastic.  The other part is probably some deep-seated fascination with Platonic (as in Plato) solids – five of the seven standard gaming dice (if you count the percentile die) share this distinction.  Or maybe it’s just that they have really cool names:  tetrahedron, hexahedron (that’s your standard cube), octahedron, decahedron (or for a real mouthful try pentagonal trapezohedron), dodecahedron, and icosahedron.

Whatever the reason, I always have to stop and take a look when dice are involved.  Over at Shapeways.com, maker avandius (a.k.a. Seth Alexander) has created a 3D printed dice set modeled after the Deathly Hallows from the Harry Potter series.  Dice can be printed in either metal or plastic and decorated according to your fancy.

So put a little 3D (printing) into your D&D with a cool set of gaming dice – those RPGs will never be the same again.  Happy rolling!
