After a successful Kickstarter campaign, German company Print2Taste tells ALL3DP why their Bocusini food printer is so special.

Heralded as the world’s first plug and play 3D food printer, Bocusini is a smarttool for the kitchen that creates edible works of art. Using cartridges pre-loaded with printable ingredients like potato, marzipan, or jam — but not all together at the same time — dishes can be whipped up within 30 minutes without any prior knowledge or expertise.

German company Print2Taste launched a Kickstarter campaign for Bocusini in May 2015, where they initially sought 30,000 euros to make their food printer production ready. In the event they comfortably exceeded their target by 25 per cent. With this first stage now complete, the team is focussed on fulfilling their orders and shipping the food printers out to their eager backers.

ALL3DP visited Print2Taste at their laboratory in Freising, Bavaria, where we had a chance to nibble on some 3D printed delicacies.

“We are determined to open up the fascinating world of food printing for everyone,” says Melanie Senger from Print2Taste. “For this, we have developed Bocusini, the most affordable 3D food printing system. The Bocusini printer can be used right out of the box. It is ‘plug & play’. This makes it the perfect tool for creative chefs or confectioners as well as for creative end users.”

Our impression is that Bocusini is an easy-to-use open source food printing system for gastronomy, patisserie, and home applications. Altogether, the system is made of a heated food printer head mounted to a standard 3D printer, a selection of easy to change cartridges with printable food, an intuitive user interface, and the Bocusini.com web platform to share creative food designs and recipes.

We’re especially impressed by how Bocusini can be used as either a dedicated food printer, or as a swappable print-head upgrade for an existing 3D printer. This ensures the most flexible set of options for cooking enthusiasts, and should encourage creativity in the kitchen.
