Online behemoth Google has just released Blocks, a new 3D modeling software that promises easy and accessible content creation for VR.
In a snapshot view right now, the business of creating media for VR consumption is a little tricky. Yes, there are slick, intuitive apps out there like TiltBrush (also a Google product) that allow you to craft freeform abstracts, but for building scenes and areas to experience in VR (and actually in VR, for that matter) is currently lacking. However, Google is looking to plug this gap so that everyone, from newbies to developers, can create their own objects more easily.
To do this, the company released an app to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive’s respectful stores. Its called Blocks, and best of all — it’s free.
Product manager Jason Toff leads Google’s VR creativity efforts. He explained to Wired:
“Right now, the time it takes to handcraft 3D objects is so cumbersome, it’s almost impossible to do… What we’re doing is saying, OK, rather than having to learn about specularity and textures and lighting, let’s just boil it down to the most essential colors and shapes and see how far you can get.”
After users have developed their own block-y designs, they can simply export them or easily share them on the internet. Check out the VR Scout video below to learn more:

There have been other developments in VR content creation of late. Back in March Sixense and HTC partnered to release MakeVR, a CAD-based VR 3D modeling program that even lets the user export files for 3D printing.
Many VR users point out that the biggest problem with the technology and medium is how much processing power even the most basic tasks or designs takes. To offset such limitations, Blocks intentionally aims for a low-fi aesthetic, and makes use of a lower polygon count. This allows users to design simple objects that require less computing power, which can then be exported and developed further in more robust design programs.
Tapping the learnings from Tilt Brush to give a easy and intuitive experience, paired to the lowered system requirements and a cutesy look, Blocks dramatically lowers the bar to VR content creation. Those who may once have been put off by daunting 3D design apps may feel right at home in Blocks.
For Toff, the important thing he hopes to come from the release of Blocks is that he wants someone to develop a “killer app”. Though he’s not that corporately fussy.
He adds: “It doesn’t even matter if it’s a Google app or another app… We just want to push the industry forward.”
