That’s no moon. That’s a massive Titanium watch with several movements and a 3D printed Jupiter face. Say hello to the Hamilton ODC X-03.
American watchmaker Hamilton has teamed up with Nathan Crowley, production designer for science fiction blockbuster Interstellar and three-time Oscar nominee, to create the ODC X-03. It’s a big watch with several distinctive features, not least of which is a full color 3D printed face depicting the planet Jupiter.
As a brand, Hamilton has a storied history with Hollywood films and sci-fi movies. Their timepieces have been worn in dozens of films going back to the 1950s. A Hamilton was worn in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and, more recently, played a major role in the aforementioned Interstellar.
The case of the Hamilton ODC X-03 is 49 x 52 mm and is made of black PVD-coated titanium. There are rivets holding the bezel to the main case, a large anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a leather-lined fabric strap. And smack-bang in the center is a photo-realistic 3D printed Jupiter that appears to partially eclipse the main aperture in the case.
Overlaid on top are three dials for telling time in three places at once – local time, Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), and home time.
Why does the ODC X-03 have a 3D printed Jupiter watch-face? It’s a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the alien artifact that triggers the action is found orbiting the giant planet by the spaceship Discovery.
If you look closely at the pictures, you can also see that there’s actually space around the edge of the 3D printed Jupiter that’s completely transparent. If you were to shine a light from the back, it would appear to be silhouetting the planet.
Aside from the aesthetic features, there’s some interesting technical details to the Hamilton ODC X-03. For one thing, the watch is housing not one, not two, but three separate movements for each dial. The main local time dial is powered by an automatic ETA 2671, while the smaller UTC and home time dials use ETA quartz movements instead.
For another, the case doesn’t have any protruding crowns. Instead, they’re set into the side of the case and flip out when you need to set the various timezones.
The Hamilton ODC X-03 is a limited edition of 999 pieces, and is priced at 3,500 CHF (with U.S. pricing at around $3,500). For more information, visit Hamilton online.
