Ikea is getting stuck in with Apple’s new AR Kit and developed an app called Place, which hopefully means no more “pivot!” when buying furniture.
A trip to Ikea often means Swedish meatballs, stealing a few pencils and an argument with your spouse. But the Swedish furniture giant wants to make one aspect of visiting the store easier; envisioning your new furnishings.
The bane of many visitor’s lives is no doubt working out whether the TIDAFORS two-seat sofa will fit in their living room. However, with Place, the new Ikea app built on the Apple AR Kit, you’ll hopefully spend less time awkwardly sketching things out with your 10-year-old tape measure.
Instead, you can use the app to 3D scan the room or space where you’d like to see your new BRIMNES day-bed. Unquestionably, the latter option is a lot cooler and more futuristic. It also proves that the Apple AR Kit could have many useful applications.
The result is that you can see what any item in the Ikea catalogue looks like anywhere in your home before you purchase. Of course, many people are already misusing the technology for fun and placing furniture in the street.

The app works by allowing you to place true to scale 3D models in your home. First, simply download the app for free from the App Store.
Next, you’ll need to 3D scan your room, using your iPhone camera. Then, you can browse the Ikea catalogue, which offers 2,oo0 options. (Currently, there is no search function for the app, so much like visiting the store, you’ll have to make your way through each section instead.)
Finally, select your choice before moving it around the virtual space and placing it. Although you can’t 3D print the resulting 3D model, you can buy your own Ikea chair, bed or bowl from the store without worrying about measuring it first.
The products are supposedly up to 98% accurate when it comes to both color and scale. The app even factors in both shadows and lighting.
For Place to work properly, you’re likely to find that you need an A9 processor running iOS 11. Want to see more ways in which makers are using and creating 3D renders using the kit? Check this out. Or, you may be interested in how you can 3D print Ikea hacks to spruce up your home.
Of course, perhaps the best part of the Place app is that you can spend less time in Ikea on a Saturday morning and more time lounging around on your new couch.
