At CES 2018, Eastman Kodak Company and its brand licensee Twindom revealed the KODAK Full Body 3D Scanner. The mobile 3D scanner produces high resolutions scans that can be 3D printed in full color.

For years and years, families and friends have used cameras to capture precious photos of what have come to be popularly known as Kodak Moments. As 3D technology continues emerging, many people are finding that these memories can now be preserved in three dimensions.

In fact, the company that created the Kodak Moments slogan is now shifting towards 3D printing and 3D scanning.

The Eastman Kodak Company and its brand licensee Twindom recently announced the KODAK Full Body 3D Scanner. The mobile machine will feature hybrid 3D scanning technology developed by Twindom. Customers will be able to step inside, take a high resolution scan of themselves, and have a figurine created with a full color 3D printer.

The system utilizes a cloud service that automatically processes the scans and sends them to a 3D printing facility. In about one to two weeks, customers will have a vibrantly colored and realistic 3D printed figurine shipped to their doorstep.

KODAK Full Body Scanner Offers Colorful 3D Memories to All

The initial plan is to sell the KODAK Full Body 3D Scanner to interested customers and services. The mobile machine can be setup in various public locations, such as events with heavy foot traffic. Each 3D scanner will come with a capture laptop and a kit with tools and spare parts. Kodak will also offer a one-year warranty and one-month premier setup support.

“The 3D market is a dynamic and growing category. 3D scanning and 3D figurines are important sectors to us. The KODAK Full Body 3D Scanner’s ease of operation, mobility and competitive pricing positions it as an incredibly exciting and fun application for both professional and consumer applications,” said Joel Satin, VP Brand Licensing, Kodak.

Surprisingly, the full body 3D scanner can simultaneously capture up to 14 adults, kids, or pets at once. Kodak claims that 3D scanner owners will have the opportunity to “make more money on every product sold” through the accompanying 3D printing service. The imaging company will take care of the order process, while operators can focus solely on scanning customers.

Kodak Makes Headway Into 3D Printing and 3D Scanning Market

Last year, Kodak announced its entry into the 3D printing market with the Portrait 3D printer and a range of filaments. In fact, Kodak may be the most recognizable brand name to develop a full body 3D scanning system. However, the imaging technology titan is far from the only one to offer this type of product or service.

For instance, former Shapeways founder Peter Weijmarshausen recently launched Beheld, a startup that also offers the tandem of full body scanning and color 3D printing. One makerspace in England was even able to construct a full-body scanner for just £1,000.

Still, as big-name brands like Kodak and Polaroid step foot into the world of 3D technology, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the dream of bringing 3D printing and 3D scanning technology to the consumer market is far from dead.
