A collaboration between i.materialise and Microsoft allows you to 3D scan, design and print anything you can imagine in 3D.

Microsoft is pushing hard to get 3D design and 3D printing on the map (All3DP reported). They even updated their image software “Paint”, which used to be pretty rudimentary, to make 3D designing as easy as possible. Also, Microsoft is invested in the new 3MF file format consortium, which wants to bring 3D modeling to the next level.

Now they have taken the next step – 3D printing directly from Windows. For this, Microsoft has teamed up with 3D printing service i.materialise to make the process as simple as possible. Microsoft and i.materialise announced their collaboration in May 2016 and promise they’ve been working hard ever since. So far, they’ve offered the 3D Builder app which allows Microsoft users to utilize i.materialise’s services.

Now, they are launching two new projects: “Paint 3D” and “Remix 3D”. By making these processes easier, they hope to make 3D printing mainstream. Check out the promotional video for Paint 3D below:

Could Paint 3D and Remix 3D Make 3D Mainstream

Microsoft will release Paint 3D, the new version of Paint, in the new Windows 10 Creator’s Update. Users will be able to import photos and turn portions of the photo into 3D objects. You can also turn a 2D sketch into a 3D image. Your designs are intended to be seen on Microsoft’s HoloLens, or they can be 3D printed directly by i.materialise.

Remix 3D will be an online community where users can share their Paint 3D creations. If you’re already an accomplished user of SketchUp and other 3D modeling programs, you will be able to import these designs into Paint 3D and Remix 3D.

You can expect the Windows 10 Creators Update in spring 2017. However, if you are an early adopter, you can preview Paint 3D already here.
