Nintendo’s 8-bit classic Duck Hunt has been revived with a twist, thanks to Redditor Downsider and a 3D printed head mount.

Joseph Delgado is a 21-year-old computer science student who created a version of Duck Hunt in less than 24 hours. The best part? Delgado’s version of Duck Hunt is Virtual Reality too.

Duck Hunt was originally released in 1985 and is considered a Nintendo Classic. It is an addictive game with a simple aim; shoot as many ducks as you can as they fly across your screen using your NES Zapper (if you happen to have one).

Delgado’s idea to revive the game came from Global Game Jam 2016, an annual game developers meet-up, where he decided to experiment with Virtual Reality.

How Did He Create a Virtual Reality Duck Hunt?

Delgado said in a blog post: “I’ve always really liked the way that 3D voxels look with pixel art! It’s a unique look and really stands out in VR. I wrote a quick Python script that converted a sprite into a 3D model with some amount of depth.”

He worked on incorporating VR into the game by using the Razer Hydra, a PC gaming-grade motion sensing controller that connects with the Oculus Rift.

However, Delgado said of the Razer Hydra: “As you get far away from the stationary base station, it really messes up the accuracy of the device, making the gun jump around and jitter in places it shouldn’t go.”

Thankfully, 3D printing came to the rescue and Delgado was able to print a head mount, based on a Thingiverse model.

The game was built for Global Game Jam 2016, and he has turned it into a seven-day challenge, which becomes progressively more difficult each day.

Delgado’s VR version of Duck Hunt has been subject to a lot of attention. He already promised to release a free version.
