The world’s largest 3D pen sculpture — of a crossover car — is commissioned to celebrate the launch of the Nissan Qashqai Black Edition.

It’s a big car with an unpronounceable name. And now the Nissan Qashqai has another distinction, as the world’s largest 3D pen sculpture.

The sculpture measures 4.4-m (14.4-ft) long and 1.6-m (5.2-ft) tall, and was created using only 3Doodler 3D printing pens.

Grace Du Prez was the lead artist on the team, who completed the project in just three weeks. She said:

“I’ve been drawing with 3Doodler’s pens for a few years now, but this is by far and away my most ambitious commission to date. It demonstrates how far 3D printing technology has come and how it can be used by anyone.”

How was the Nissan Qashqai drawn?

The finished car contains a huge 13.8 km (8.6 mi) of 3D printed strands of filament. The team were supplied with 3Doodler 3D pens to draw the sculpture — and weren’t allowed to use anything else!

Nissan said in a press release: “While Nissan produces 58 (Nissan Qashqai) every hour at its plant in Sunderland, UK, this bespoke version took 800 man-hours to complete over a three-week period.”

The pens worked in the same way as always, heating up plastic strands before extruding them through the metal nozzle. Once a strand is “drawn”, it can be shaped and bent before it cools and hardens.

Koji Nagano, Vice President of Nissan Design Europe, said: “At Nissan we always encourage initiatives where design can be expressed through new and innovative technologies. This artistic team have certainly pushed the boundaries of 3D pen technology in creating an impressive sculpture of our premium Qashqai Black Edition.”
