Adding to their Industrial range of materials, Polymaker and Covestro announce the launch of two new polyurethane materials, U1000 and U0174D.

3D printing material developer Polymaker has announced the arrival of two new polyurethane materials, U1000 and U0174D.

The Chinese company produced them in partnership with Covestro, adding to their Polymaker Industrial range.

Based out of Leverkusen, Germany, Covestro is a supplier of high-tech polymers. Yvonne Wang, Business Development Manager for Additive Manufacturing, comments on developing with polyurethane:

“Polyurethane is an incredibly versatile chemistry that can be used to create almost endless possibilities in materials.”

Intended application areas for U1000 and U0174D include manufacturing, automotive, and medicine. Both materials are suitable for demanding use cases thanks to their high mechanical strength, layer adhesion, and heat resistance.

Application-Specific Materials

Despite their similar use cases in industry, the two materials do have their differences.

U1000 is stiffer. In more technical terms, it has a higher modulus, meaning more force is required to change its shape. (Not to be confused with strength, the amount of force a material can withstand and retain its shape.)

The stiff material is comparable to glassy polymers like polycarbonate and polystyrene.

U0174D, on the other hand, is more ductile. That means it can experience a higher level of deformation before it fractures.

In appearance, U0174D is similar to a semi-crystalline plastic like PET.

Both Polymaker and Covester anticipate their latest products to be popular. Dr. Xiaofan Luo, President of Polymaker, comments:

“We are very excited about these two materials. They will certainly enable lots of new applications and open opportunities in a variety of industries.”
