Lychee Slicer version 7.2.2 is out.

The minor update fixes a "file not found" error some users were experiencing by "revamp[[ing]] the file-loading system".

The update also adds support for some new 3D printers: the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra, Nova 3D Whale 4 Ultra 16K, and – in the filament department – the FLsun S1 Pro.

There are a few more tweaks in there from the 7.2.1 beta, too. Restored TMSC values with a toggle for tilt mechanisms, new display scaling, and improvements to the Lychee Library UI.

Impressive Submersibles
What does the U.S. Navy 3D print with its Prusa?

A recent U.S. Dept. of Defense blog post (yes, it has a blog) detailed its "game-changing" 3D printing program for prototypes and repairs at the impressively named Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Printers from EOS, HP, and Prusa Research, among others there create essential and parts for submarines and ships along with other "money-saving innovations."

Piece of Pi
It turns out Formlabs uses a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 in the Form 4.

Eagle-eyed enthusiasts caught this in earlier Form 4 teardowns, but Raspberry Pi has reminded everyone with a new case study about the resin 3D printer.

Always an interesting tidbit to know what unicorn companies like Formlabs are doing; maybe the example will help someone in a bid to use a system-on-module off-the-shelf.

What AI Built
Sure, generative design and AI for 3D printing are cool, but has anyone actually built anything? This.

Generative Machine is a startup (so startup their website is still under construction) with an open-source desktop 5-axis FDM 3D printer in beta that was designed entirely using Autodesk’s Generative Design suite in Fusion. The software rapidly generates a range of design alternatives based on parameters designers suggest, such as material, manufacturing method, and performance requirements.

Feel-Good Filaments
It's difficult to pronounce, but easy to commend.

Fillamentum's NonOilen filament is back in stock. A 100% biodegradable and, importantly, recyclable PLA/PVB blend, it looks natural, is certified is food-safe, temperature resistant, fully reusable, and all-round seems a little more guilt-free than regular filament.

With the EU’s Right to Repair Laws, It’s a Tinkerer’s Market

The EU's upcoming right-to-repair laws have wide-reaching implications, especially (and specifically) in 3D printing. There's an opportunity here for print farms to fill a greater need in the market.

Slammin' Salmon
Apparently bleach printing and 3D printed designs are a good match.

In a recent video, YouTuber Mikey Makes Things shows off his impromptu process and very impressive results!

There's really not much to it. Create a mirrored design, lay it face up, spray on some household bleach, and press the fabric. Easy.

CAD + CAM
The one thing Onshape was missing has arrived.

Onshape, one of the easiest, browser-based, computer-aided design (CAD) platforms to use, finally launched its computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) suite in beta. Onshape CAM Studio, which was teased as far back as Jan. 2024, is a fully integrated, cloud-native CAM system out now for all pro and enterprise subscribers. It includes 2.5- and 3-axis milling with more advanced milling in an optional advanced module.

CNC For Yourself
Sainsmart's Genmitsu Cubiko desktop CNC has soared past its Kickstarter goal, surpassing its modest $30,000 target by over $800,000.

We covered the entry-level CNC when its Kickstarter launched last month, with a keen interest in its promise to mill PCB far cleaner than the average CNC; specifically boasting a +/- 0.01 mm. This is, of course, in addition to other CNC functions like carving, laser engraving, or pen plotting.

$299 packages of the $500 MSRP enclosed CNC are still available, so be sure to check out our full coverage if you're interested.

Don't Try This At Home
A 3D printer for tattoos?

YouTube channel Emily the Engineer decided it was high time 3D printers took a step back to 2D printing with ink... just on human flesh. So, naturally, the channel set out to automate tattooing with (seemingly) willing guinea pig and fellow YouTuber Build Daniel Build, tattooing the word "LEG" on his thigh.

You might have seen some coverage of the Ender 7 conversion last week when it garnered lots of attention. We saw it. We love it. We hope you did, too. For the record, I would love one of these tattoos.

Printing's Eco Impact
The US still believes in sustainability!

America's national defense manufacturing research wing (the NCDMM) is putting $2.1 million into new research on the sustainability and environmental benefits of additive manufacturing. ASTM International, the standards organization, will developing ways to reuse and recycle 3D printing materials while helping manufacturers implement eco-friendly practices. ASTM leads a team that also includes Boeing, 3D printing service Addman, Amaero Advanced Materials & Manufacturing, and the Additive Manufacturing Green Trade Association.
