Weekend Poll
How do you get rid of empty filament spools?

A recent Reddit post that garnered some interest has us wondering. Masterspool refills are an option, for sure, but require a degree of forward thinking that may not be so apparent when you first start out printing. Cardboard spools are easier, since they can be recycled with regular cardboard waste. Turning them into storage bins and other creative projects can be a useful way to deal with the issue. How do you do it?

Cool Trace
I'm all for learning to CAD my own models, but some shortcuts are too convenient to ignore.

One great example of this that I recently stumbled upon is tooltrace.ai, a tool maintained by manufacturing service provider finalRev. With it, you can quickly configure Gridfinity or foam shadow boxes to fit your tools. All you need is a photograph of the tools on or next to a sheet of A4 size paper, and Tooltrace will figure out the rest. So quick. So convenient.

Wild Ride
This AI designed, 3D printed dirt bike is pure overkill — and it's awesome.

Ask teenage bike designer Dylan Banera of TBD Bikes why he printed a dirt bike with generatively designed lugs and a gyroid-lattice frame infill, and he'd likely answer: Because I can. Banera showed up at the annual MADE Handmade Bike Show last month with this aluminum 3D printed bike frame and described it to BikeRumor magazine as an exploration of AI-based design software. He went from concept to rideable bike in just a few months. Read more over at BikeRumor.

Aerospike alive!
3D printed copper rocket engine defies the doubters.

Once dismissed as “too heavy, too complex, not worth it,” the monolithic aerospike rocket engine has had the last laugh. LEAP 71’s 5 kN 5 kN KeroLOX thruster — think of it as rocket science on autopilot: algorithms designed it, 3D printers built it — has survived even more hot-fire testing recently. The weight is on par with bell-nozzle engines, the complexity reduced to a single printed piece, and there's significant efficiency gains, LEAP 71 says. Manufactured at Aconity3D.

Nice Ride!
No.22 unveils 3D printed bike, immediately drowns in fan mail.

The small team at N.Y.-based No.22 Bicycle Company accidentally broke the cycling internet with their latest iteration of the 3D printed titanium Reactor Aero. After being sufficiently buried in inquiries, they've surfaced with the details everyone is clamoring for. In short: Yes, it aims to be as stiff as carbon with the legendary "Ti feel." No, you can't have custom geometry just yet. And the price? A cool $10,000-$15,000 for the frameset. First units to roll out in early 2026. Follow the company's socials for the latest.

Same Layers, Different Crunch
What Do KitKats and 3D Printed Tools Have in Common? Layers, of course.

Nestlé, the maker of KitKats, started 3D printing spare parts for the very machines that churn out its chocolate bars and other products across three factories in the UK. Partnering with Markforged, Nestlé’s York-based 3D printing workshop plans to print at least 5% of its factory inventory in-house. Nestlé says the initiative has led to substantial cost savings over traditional manufacturing.
