International 3D printing day has come and gone, but these low-poly Darth Vader and Stormtrooper models by Agustin Flowalistik make a nice souvenir.

The third day of December was designated by 3D Hubs as International 3D Printing Day. It’s a clever pun; squint real hard at 3rd December on your calendar, and the letters “3” and “D” start looking very cosy indeed.

The day saw a huge flurry of activity from 3d hubbers and fablabs worldwide, and no doubt we’ll be seeing the same action repeated this time next year.

Our favorite episode from the past 24 hours? The unveiling of new creations by Agustin Flowalistik, a pair of low-poly Darth Vader and Stormtrooper models.

These iconic characters will provide a simple printing project for Star Wars fans both old and new. They’re available to download for free from multiple sources, including Thingiverse (Darth / Trooper), Cults (Darth / Trooper), and YouMagine (Darth / Trooper).

Low-Poly Darth Vader is Retrotastic

Flowalistik, if you hadn’t heard of him already, is the mad genius behind the low-poly Pokemon series. These insanely popular models are also free, and among the most downloaded files on several 3D printing community sites.

Now he’s back with a bang, his latest work timed to coincide with the fanboy fever surrounding the impending release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The inspiration behind the Darth Vader and Stormtrooper models is pretty clear, as he says:

First of all, I want to dedicate this model to all the geek people and specially to my friends that haven’t stopped talking about Star Wars since Star Wars: Episode VII was announced.

Both the Darth Vader and Stormtrooper models are 130mm height and are made from three different parts: head, body and connector. For Darth Vader, there are also two different versions of the body; one with cape and the other one without. That means sourcing your own little scrap of black cloth for the cape, just like the old Kenner toys from back in the day.

Designed with simplicity in mind, neither model should need support material to be printed. Print time is estimated at less than 2 hours at 0.2mm layer height. For the distressed look in the pictures, post-processing consists of spray painting and sanding.
