Korean electronics giant Samsung has revealed the 360 Round camera, promising professional streamable 3D 4K VR content on demand.
Aimed specifically at prosumer and professional content makers, Samsung‘s new 360 Round camera is poised to offer something a little more robust than it’s previous 360-degree snapper, the Gear 360.
The move is likely in anticipation of Youtube and Facebook’s burgeoning VR content offerings. However, with the added complexity of immersive 360 degree video comes the need for higher resolutions.
To this, Samsung have stated that the 360 Round’s cameras capture in 4K, at up to 30 frames per second (per eye, if viewing in VR).
And, on top of all that, stereoscopic 3D. This is possible due to the camera’s positioning of its lenses. Though most would think 3D footage is consigned to the cinema (with Samsung itself sounding out the death knell for home 3D television), here it is again.
Perhaps the camera’s biggest selling point comes in its claimed ease of use. The software packaged with the camera gives one-step stitching for lickedy-split VR footage.
You’ll need a beefy computer to handle any footage shot with this thing though. Minimum specs have you requiring a 16GB DDR4 RAM, 6th-gen i7 processor and Nvidia GTX 1080 or higher. And that’s just post production. Live streamers hoping to use the system will need to go above and beyond to take advantage of the very-low-latency broadcast capabilities.
Understandably when you have a lens pointing up at the sky, some degree of waterproofing is necessary. Specifically, Samsung have applied an IP65 dust and water rating to the 360 Round. This means it’s protected against dust and water spray (from all directions).
The company also puts some stock in the camera’s lack of cooling fan, and thus smaller and lighter footprint than other 360-degree camera rigs. At just shy of 2kg and 205 x 205 x 77mm, it does cut a svelte figure.
In addition two external microphone ports accompany the 360 Round’s six inbuilt microphones. Further connectivity comes in the form of an SD-card slot, USB Type-C and LAN.
Oh, and did we say it looks like a Roomba? Yeah, it looks a lot like a Roomba. And while Samsung have been coy about the price, we fully expect it to vacuum up a large chunk of cash (CNET reports it at an eye-watering $10,500) from those willing to splurge on it.
Samsung announced the 360 Round yesterday with a US release window of “October”. So expect to see it in stores in time for Halloween.
