Chinese maker and tech reviewer Naomi Wu, aka SexyCyborg, has attached a 3D printer to the frame of a backpack, so she can print on the go.
3D printing takes time, and you don’t always have the luxury of sitting around to make sure nothing goes wrong. If only there were some way to monitor your print and do your chores at the same time…
Taking matters into her own hands is Naomi Wu, aka SexyCyborg, a maker and web developer based in Shenzhen, China. With a little imagination and technical know-how, she has put together a contraption that allows her to wear a 3D printer like a backpack.
Wu’s primary task involved mounting a BIQU Magician 3D printer and some batteries to a modified baby carrier. Along with some drilling and blowtorching, Wu accomplished her goal through the use of custom 3D printed components.
The PLA parts fix the delta printer and 12 amp-hour batteries to the carrier’s metal frame. To ensure strength, she printed them with 30% infill on her FlashForge printers.
To test her project, Wu spent two hours walking through her city of Shenzhen, all the while printing! The experiment took her through metro stations, restaurants, and sunny streets.
Naturally, moving around in an exterior environment presents several challenges for printing. Potential problems include bumping into people and extended heat exposure from the sun.
Nevertheless, the prints — miniature versions of SexyCyborg herself — were unaffected by the hustle and bustle of busy Shenzhen. There were no jams or other accidents requiring attention, seemingly confirming Wu’s claim that the Magician is a reliable device.
In her YouTube video, one can easily see the many people interested in the device. And Wu is happy to accommodate them, allowing onlookers to take pictures and videos. At one point, she even stops in a Starbucks to answer questions about the printer.
Of particular importance to Wu is promoting interest in 3D printing among women. Indeed, as we’ve seen before, the maker is passionate about fighting technology’s association with men. In her words,
“You would be surprised — you would think, ‘Oh it must be guys who are more interested.’ Yes, they are, but when (girls) ask me to explain it, they can figure it out right away.”
Thanks to her abundant imagination, talent, and passion, we at All3DP are always looking forward to her next big project.
