Powered by a Raspberry Pi, the TyTelli is a DIY 3D printed smartphone which anyone can make for themselves.

If you go through phones too quickly and you need something a little more sturdy, why not 3D print your own fully-functioning smartphone?

The TyTelli is a DIY smartphone which comes with the promise that anyone can make it themselves. In order for the phone to work, it uses the Raspberry Pi for processing and has a 3.5in touchscreen.

Tyler Spadgenske is the young designer behind this slightly time-consuming but utterly fulfilling project. This smartphone project is just one of his many interesting designs, which you can find here.

The phone has all the basic functions of your regular smartphone, and thanks to an Adafruit FONA the TyTelli has the capability to make calls, send SMS messages, and tell you the time.

Although you’ll need time, skills and effort to make your own TyTelli, you’ll likely find that the ability to customize your design and the sheer affordability of the project is worth some sweat and tears.

Check out the video below to see how Spadgenske built his own phone, but keep in mind that this video shows the TYOS 0.1.0 being used. Many new features have been added since then.

How Can I Make a TyTelli Smartphone?

The smartphone has the Raspberry Pi, camera, and FONA screwed down into two 3D printed parts, which you can customize yourself.

As well as being able to call and text, the smartphone also has a 5mp camera module giving it the power to take HD photos and send them to Dropbox over WiFi.

In order to be able to do this, the TyTelli has a USB wifi adapter so it can communicate with the internet along with cellular networks.

If you think you’re up to the task of making your own 3D printed smartphone, Spadgenske advises you that you will need basic soldering skills, familiarity with Raspberry Pi, and access to a 3D printer. If you have all of these, what’s stopping you?
