Action-packed videogame “Earthfall” has an interesting new strategic game element: You’ll have to 3D print your equipment and search for blueprints.

The new shooter Earthfall is a mission-based cooperative multiplayer shooter for up to four players from Holospark. Sounds familiar? Yes, Left 4 Dead or Evolve come to mind.

The game is set in the US Pacific Northwest. Aliens have invaded earth, an electromagnetic pulse has eliminated most of the world’s electronic devices. But the resistance has built some new tools: 3D printers can fabricate guns, barricades or tools.

Crafting is a key element of most games, so there‘s no surprise here. What’s new is that players can use 3D printers to manufacture the items they need. So our Gang of Four has not only to fight alien hordes, we’re also is involved in the micromanagement of the colony.

3D Printers Add Strategic Elements to the EarthFall

Earthfall’s gaming mechanics differs from regular shooters in some ways. Utilizing 3D printers (one of its unique story bits), players are able to quickly print weapons and craftable materials. If the player is surrounded by alien forces and didn’t prepare for it by building barricades or fences, he’ll have to 3D print weapons fast, as he will be dealing with a lot more enemies. If you complete a mission without being torn up, you’ll get loot, perks, and additional blueprints, which you can use with your 3D printers.

People actually using 3D printers will be laughing when you see the printing times: 2 seconds for a frag grenade? 5 seconds for a futuristic, full-metal AK67 assault rifle? But, hey: it’s just a game, right?

Earthfall will be released on Steam this spring with a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release following later this year. Check the trailer below for an appetizer.
