James Bruton, the man behind the YouTube channel XRobots, aims to break the Guinness World Record for largest 3D printed sculpture.
If you happen to wander through the Winchester Discovery Centre in Southampton, UK, you’ll be greeted by a towering human sculpture that stands at 12 feet tall. For those well-versed in the vast realm of 3D printing YouTube channels, you might recognize this looming plastic effigy as James Bruton, an esteemed maker and host of XRobots.
With over 350,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, Bruton is known for his reality-warping cosplay and ambitious DIY projects. Earlier this year, he made quite the stir with a gigantic electric skateboard out of 3D printed LEGO bricks. Now, the 41-year-old maker is making himself the star of his next undertaking, creating a record-breaking 3D printed sculpture of himself.

The current record for the largest 3D printed sculpture of a human stands at 3.06m, but Bruton’s model will reportedly measure out to 3.62m. The statue took over 500 hours of print time to complete, made from over a dozen individual pieces produced on two Lulzbot 3D printers.
Currently, the 50kg bust is standing in the auditorium of the Winchester Discovery Centre. The 3D printed project has already been inspected by a quantity surveyor, but it will still take Guinness about 12 weeks to officially declare Bruton as the new record holder.
The adjudicators still have to check and ensure that the structure is free standing, self-supporting, and made solely of 3D printed materials. According to Bruton, perhaps humorously, he decided to use himself as the model to “avoid any potential copyright issues”.
“I thought it would be fun to try and do a world record attempt and settled on the biggest humanoid statue because it was the most manageable – some of the other 3D printing world records are insane,” Bruton said.
As expected, the YouTuber filmed and documented the entire project, and will release a series on the sculpture through his channel starting in December. Undeniably fond of trying to shatter records, Bruton has hinted that he might try and make the world’s biggest skateboard for his next DIY scheme.
