Lamborghini Surprises Father and Son Building 3D Printed Replica With a Real Aventador

Earlier this year, All3DP spoke to Sterling Backus, a tinkerer and laser physicist, about his 3D printed car project. Backus was inspired by his son Xander’s video game, to build a Lamborghini Aventador using a 3D printer.

Sterling and Xander Backus have been working on their replica for nearly two years using desktop 3D printers such as a QIDI X-Pro and even took their 3D-printed car out for a test drive.

Yet the biggest surprise came in the form of a telephone call from Katia Bassi, who is the chief marketing officer of Automobili Lamborghini.

The company got wind of the ambitious father-son project and wanted to shoot a holiday commercial with the family. But more importantly, they were going to loan them a real Lamborghini Aventador S, which cost’s about $460,200 off the shelf, for two weeks

Backus said that he drove the Aventador every day and that “their amazing generosity will never be forgotten.”

So far, the father-son team has spent approximately $23,000 on this project and is targeting August for a local big car show to unveil the finished project.
